Areas Spain could give assistance to Barbados

Spain and Barbados Flags

Prime Minister Freundel Stuart has identified renewable energy, tourism and culture as possible areas of collaboration between Barbados and Spain.

Mr. Stuart made the comments recently when Spain’s new Ambassador to
Barbados, Javier Fernandez Carbajosa, and Honorary Consul, Mandy Chandler,
paid him a courtesy call at Ilaro Court.
Explaining that renewable energy was very important to Barbados, the Prime
Minister pointed out that the island was in the process of creating a green economy,
which would require Government to invest more heavily in renewables.
On the point of tourism, he said there was greater scope for people-to- people
contact and he would like to see an increase in Spaniards visiting these shores. He
also suggested that Barbados’ tourism infrastructure could benefit from “Spanish
input”, indicating that this could boost arrivals.
Mr. Stuart stated that Barbados was trying to develop its cultural industries
and expressed the view that a Memorandum of Understanding with Spain could be
developed in this area.
Barbados and Spain established diplomatic relations 37 years ago, and the
Prime Minister noted that while a Double Taxation Agreement was in place, the time
had come to improve the relationship.
Ambassador Carbajosa said he was ready to undertake any necessary
process to push bilateral relations. He agreed that Spain could assist in the areas of
renewable energy, cultural exchanges and tourism, disclosing that about 75 million
tourists visited his country last year.

Walk for a Green Belize, 2017

Green Belize

In commemoration of World Environment Day 2017, the Department of the Environment (DOE), the Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWaMA) and the Belize Audubon Society (BAS) conducted the “Walk for a Green Belize” 2017. This event was held on Saturday, October 14th , 2017 and involved cleaning both sides of the George Price Highway from Belize City to Benque Viejo del Carmen.

An estimated 985 (20 to 55 gallon-sized) bags of garbage were collected yielding an estimated weight of 10,800 pounds of garbage!

The Walk For A Green Belize clean-up activity was conducted by over 650 volunteers that included organizations, students, activists, government and non-government agencies, as well as the general public. The Secretariat for the “Walk for a Green Belize” initiative extends heartfelt gratitude to all the participants and sponsors of the event and we look forward to your support and participation in the “ Walk for a Green Belize ” 2018.

To make this event exciting and more engaging, we had sponsored a friendly competition for all participants for which there were two categories in which a team of volunteers could win. A prize of $200.00 along with a plaque will be given to the winning teams on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the DOE as follows.

1.) Belmopan Police Cadets – Largest number of volunteers a team or group brings out; 2.) St. Agnes Anglican School – Largest number of completely filled garbage bags a team collects.

The Department of the Environment (DOE) takes this opportunity to remind motorists, passengers and the general public travelling along Belize’s roadways that littering is a violation of our laws, carrying a ticket fine of $100.00 for a person and $500.00 for a company. Littering creates a huge environmental challenge in terms of land and water contamination, with negative impacts to wildlife and landscape aesthetics. Let us keep Belize clean and maintain a healthy environment!

CROP
Director General of the OECS Commission, Didacus Jules; and World Bank Country Director for the Caribbean, Tahseen Sayed Khan, sign CROP Grant Agreement in Washington DC on October 14, 2017.

OECS Signs US$6.3M to Support Blue Economy Transition in the Eastern Caribbean.

Washington DC – The commitment to sustainable growth and resilience of the Caribbean’s Blue Economy was strengthened on Saturday October 14, with the signing of a US$6.3 million Grant Agreement for the Caribbean Regional Oceanscape Project (CROP).

The Agreement, signed during the World Bank’s Annual Meetings at its headquarters in Washington DC by Dr. Didacus Jules, Director General of the OECS Commission; and Ms. Tahseen Sayed Khan, World Bank Country Director for the Caribbean, will support Eastern Caribbean countries to preserve and strengthen resilience of coastal and marine resources, and implement regional policies to stimulate blue growth.
In light of the recent devastating impacts of hurricanes on OECS Member States, and on other states and territories of the Caribbean Region, Commander David Robin, Programme Coordinator of Ocean Governance and Fisheries at the OECS Commission, made a presentation on the theme Unlocking Ocean Wealth in Support of Sustainable Growth and Resilience: Strengthening Ocean Governance in the Eastern Caribbean.
Commander Robin also outlined CROP’s support towards the implementation of the OECS Eastern Caribbean Regional Ocean Policy, (ECROP), which is a global best practice in regional co-operation for transition to a sustainable ocean economy (a blue economy).
The signing of the Grant Agreement comes to fruition following negotiations in July 12, 2017, and approval of the Project by the Executive Directors of the World Bank on September 25, 2017. The Project was officially declared effective on October 18, 2017.
Specifically, CROP will:

  • Support the implementation of regional policies, including mapping ocean assets, developing coastal and marine spatial plans and national ocean policies and strategies through active citizen engagement;
  • Collaborate with private sector technology companies and education platforms to advance ocean education; and
  • Improve OECS ocean data coverage and access through collaborative public-private platforms.

This support will allow countries to better manage natural infrastructure which is the first line of defense against storm surges and damage from rising frequency of extreme weather events, such as the recent hurricanes.
The Caribbean Regional Oceanscape Project is funded by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF), administered by the World Bank, and will be implemented by the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States Commission in close collaboration with Member States.
Participating Eastern Caribbean countries are Dominica, Grenada, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

“YOUR VOTE IS SECRET”

ballot paper

The Elections and Boundaries Department hereby informs the general public, that in any election, ballot papers are numbered for reconciliation and accountability purposes. Election Officials have a responsibility to ensure that all ballot papers counted in an election are only those legitimate ballot papers issued by the Presiding Officer. The public is advised that the law DOES NOT require any Presiding Officer or any election official, to inform anyone of the ballot book series or the ballot paper number he/she issues at any given point during the election process.
Whenever the Presiding Officer issues a ballot paper to a voter, the voter proceeds behind a
polling booth, within the polling station, to privately cast his/her vote. The voter is then
requested to fold the ballot paper in such a way so as to conceal his/her vote prior to placing the ballot paper in the ballot box.
Furthermore, in order to safeguard the secrecy of the vote, Section 39 of the Representation of the People Act, makes provision for offences for any person who infringes the secrecy of the vote [Please see attachment].Any of these infringements carries a penalty of a fine not exceeding one thousand dollars and in default, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year.
The Elections and Boundaries Department assures the general public that training for public
officers, assigned election duties, will continue; and the issuing of random ballots be maintained. It has never been the standard practice that ballot books number sequence are announced at the polling station; nor are ballots issued to voters in sequential order.
The general public is therefore advised that the process employed in the simulations conducted by BUFERHD is flawed and without merit.
